This passage tells the story of Jacob’s encounter with God in a dream while on his journey from Beersheba to Haran.

  • Verses 10–11: Jacob stops for the night and sleeps with a stone for a pillow.

  • Verses 12–13: He dreams of a stairway (or ladder) reaching from earth to heaven, with angels ascending and descending, and the Lord standing above it.

  • Verses 13–15: God reaffirms the covenant made with Abraham and Isaac, promising Jacob land, many descendants, and that through his family all nations will be blessed. God also promises His presence and protection.

  • Verses 16–17: Jacob wakes in awe and declares, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it!” He calls the place Bethel (“House of God”).

  • Verses 18–22: Jacob sets up the stone as a pillar, pours oil on it, and makes a vow: if God protects and provides for him, he will serve God and give Him a tenth of all he receives.
