This passage describes an event from Jesus’ childhood, when He was 12 years old. His family traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival, as was their yearly custom. After the festival:

• Verses 41–43: Jesus stays behind in Jerusalem without His parents’ knowledge.

• Verses 44–46: Mary and Joseph, thinking He was with others, travel a full day before realizing He’s missing. After three days of searching, they find Him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening and asking questions.

• Verse 47: Everyone is amazed at His understanding and answers.

• Verses 48–49: When His mother expresses concern, Jesus responds, "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father’s house?"
