This passage records the covenant between Jacob and Laban, marking the end of their conflict-filled relationship. After years of mistrust and tension, Laban suggests a peace agreement:

• Verse 44: Laban proposes a covenant between him and Jacob as a witness to their future relationship.

• Verse 45–46: Jacob sets up a stone pillar, and both men and their companions pile stones to create a witness heap (Mizpah).

• Verses 47–48: Laban names the place Jegar Sahadutha (Aramaic), while Jacob calls it Galeed (Hebrew), both meaning "witness heap."

• Verses 49–50: Laban calls on God as the witness and warns Jacob not to mistreat his daughters or take other wives in secret. The Mizpah blessing ("May the Lord watch between you and me when we are apart") symbolizes accountability before God, even in separation.
