This passage describes how Jesus called and sent out His twelve disciples to continue His mission.

• Verse 1: Jesus gives the twelve authority to drive out impure spirits and heal every disease and sickness.

• Verses 2–4: The names of the twelve apostles are listed: Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John (sons of Zebedee), Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew the tax collector, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot (who would later betray Him).

• Verses 5–6: Jesus instructs them to go only to the lost sheep of Israel at this stage, not to Gentiles or Samaritans.

• Verses 7–8: Their message: “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” Along with preaching, they are to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, and drive out demons—freely giving what they have received.

• Verses 9–10: They are told not to take money, extra clothing, or supplies for the journey. Instead, they are to depend on God’s provision through those who welcome them.
