Joshua is near Jericho, preparing for battle. Suddenly, he encounters a mysterious figure—later understood as a divine presence (the Commander of the Lord’s army).

Joshua’s first instinct is to categorize:

But God’s response shifts the perspective completely:
👉 “I didn’t come to take sides—I came to take over.”

God was already moving—but Joshua almost misunderstood it.

1. We Try to Fit God Into Our Plans (v. 13)

Joshua asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

He assumed God had come to support his strategy.

👉 Lesson: We often want God to endorse our plans instead of seeking His.

Sometimes we miss God because we’re looking for Him in our direction, not His.

2. God Doesn’t Take Sides — He Takes Control (v. 14)

The answer was clear: “Neither…”

God wasn’t choosing a side—He was establishing authority.

👉 Lesson: The real question is not “Is God on my side?”
It is “Am I on God’s side?”

3. Recognition Requires Humility

When Joshua understood who he was facing, he fell to the ground in worship.

4. God Moves Before We Understand

God was already there before the battle of Jericho even began.
