In this passage, Jesus challenges the way people understood righteousness.
They followed rules—but their hearts were unchanged.

Jesus goes deeper.
He shows that God is not just concerned with what we do, but who we are.

Message:

1. God Desires Faithfulness, Not Just Formality (v. 31–32)

People were using the law to justify easy divorce.
Jesus confronts this mindset by pointing to commitment and responsibility.

👉 Truth: Righteousness is not about finding legal exits—it’s about honoring sacred commitments.

God is not impressed by loopholes—He values loyalty.

2. God Desires Truth, Not Performance (v. 33–37)

People made oaths to prove they were telling the truth.
Jesus says:

“Let your ‘Yes’ be yes, and your ‘No,’ no.”

👉 Truth: When your life is honest, your words don’t need decoration.

Integrity means you are the same person—publicly and privately.

3. God Desires Grace, Not Revenge (v. 38–40)

The law allowed retaliation: “Eye for eye.”
But Jesus introduces a radical response:

• Turn the other cheek
• Give more than what is demanded
• Refuse to repay evil with evil

👉 Truth: Strength is not in getting even—it is in rising above.

Grace is the mark of a transformed heart.

Key Message:

Jesus is not lowering the standard—He is raising it.
From outward behavior to inward transformation.
